Tax Disclaimer This tool provides general invoice and tax calculation assistance and does not determine your specific tax obligations. GST/HST and other sales tax requirements depend on the type of supply, customer location, and other circumstances. Confirm the appropriate tax treatment with the CRA, Revenu Québec, or a qualified accountant before filing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to charge GST/HST on my invoices? +
You must register for and collect GST/HST once your revenue from taxable supplies exceeds $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or in any four consecutive calendar quarters. Before that threshold, you are a "small supplier" and are not required to charge GST/HST. Confirm your specific situation with the CRA or a qualified accountant.
What must a Canadian invoice include? +
A basic invoice should include your business name and address, the client's name and address, an invoice number, date, description of goods or services, and the total amount. If GST/HST registered, invoices over $30 must also show your GST/HST number and tax amount separately. Invoices over $150 must also show the tax rate. Quebec businesses must display their QST registration number.
What is the difference between GST and HST? +
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 5% federal tax applied across Canada. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with a provincial component into a single rate — used in Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland (15%), Nova Scotia (14%), and PEI (15%). Quebec uses GST (5%) alongside its own QST (9.975%) collected separately by Revenu Québec.
What is the place-of-supply rule? +
The GST/HST rate you charge generally depends on where the supply is made — typically where your customer is located, not where your business is. For example, if you are based in Ontario but your client is in Alberta, you would normally charge 5% GST rather than 13% HST. Place-of-supply rules can be complex for intangible services and digital products. Verify with the CRA for your specific business type.
Is this invoice generator really free? +
Yes — completely free. No account required, no watermarks on your PDF, no limits on invoices. This tool is provided free by Instaccountant to help Canadian freelancers, contractors, incorporated professionals, and small businesses create professional invoices quickly.
Can I save my invoice and come back to it? +
Yes — click "Save Draft" to store your invoice data in your browser's local storage. It will be there next time you visit on the same device and browser. Note that clearing your browser data will remove saved drafts.
How do I invoice a Quebec client — do I charge GST and QST? +
For supplies made in Quebec, businesses registered for QST must generally charge both GST (5%) and QST (9.975%). Both taxes must appear separately on the invoice with their respective registration numbers. If you are outside Quebec supplying to Quebec customers, the rules depend on the type of supply — consult Revenu Québec at revenuquebec.ca.
